Dear Andi:
All three of my cats have recently gone through bouts of Feline Urinary Syndrome. I've been to the veterinarian several times this year, and although I've been feeding them a natural dry food that claims to be good for the urinary tract, it's a problem that seems to keep cropping up. What can I do?
Worried in Washington
First of all, we never recommend that dry food be fed to any cat, which is healthy or otherwise. Dry food tends to dry out the entire body and holistic veterinarians warn against feeding dry food.
One of the first things that any veterinarian will do when a cat has kidney problems or urinary tract problems is to hydrate the body, using subcutaneous fluids. I always ask the question, if the cats were not hydrated, why would they need artificial hydration?
Cats must be able to ingest and retain fluids in their body to help keep organs functioning properly and keep the urinary tract open and clear. We always recommend wet food over dry food to assist the body in taking in as much moisture as would be required for healthy elimination processes.
A cat's body is actually comprised of about 80% moisture. In the wild, it would consume it's prey (a bird, mouse, lizard), which is also about 80% moisture. Dry food may contain 5% moisture, and in my book, it's actually anti-nature. If you want the very best kind of food for your cats, it would contain lots of meat and vegetables, which provide the body with liquids. I can email you a simple recipe that you can make at home for a super chicken stew, which has helped thousands of cats to stay healthy and for you to remain worry free!
