Q: Both of my dogs have been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and have issues with constipation and vomiting sometimes. We have them on a natural dry food - so it couldn't be that. My vet says that it's usual for Golden Retrievers to have these issues. What do you think?
A: Its definitely not natural or normal to have these chronic digestive problems, no matter what breed of dog you have. The symptoms you describe are directly linked to the type of food you're feeding. Dry food is often so difficult to digest. It dries out the digestive tract as well as the coat and skin (which is often a reflection of what's going on inside).
Dry food tends to form a kind of plaque within the system, often making it difficult for it to be absorbed, utilized and, most importantly, eliminated with ease. Since dry foods are comprised of mostly grains - like corn, wheat, or rice - it tends to clog up the system and makes it harder for the body to process on every level.
For a clean, clear digestive tract, choose a wonderful canned food made primarily with meat and vegetables. Once the body rids itself of the dry food remnants, you should notice the elimination process happen with ease. The food will be better absorbed, so there should be no vomiting and chances are your dogs will have better coats, trim bodies, and fabulous breath.
A healthy diet produces a clean, clear digestive tract and I've seen the turn around in IBS pets in about a week's time. Real, wholesome, natural foods produce great health on every level.
